Audio Bibles Narrated by Women

Many, if not most, audio bibles are read by men, so I’m always delighted to discover one narrated by a woman! Audio bibles are great resource for those unable to read a printed copy or for those who prefer to listen on the go.

Hearing a woman’s voice read the scriptures is so special to me. Throughout time women have had limited access to education and religious authority. While we’ve made progress in the last 100 years or so, a woman reading scripture aloud can still be a contentious topic. I’m encouraged by the increase in female clergy and those who read the text aloud. It is no small thing.

Four Audio Bibles Read by Women

Courage For Life

I appreciate how the creators of this smart phone app recognize the potential for distinct traumas in a woman’s life and the healing aspect of hearing yourself represented in the reading of scripture.

This audio bible is produced by Cru, formally known as Campus Crusades for Christ. It offers both the Old and New Testaments in the New Living Translation. Recordings are available on their website and through their app. I started listening to Mark and it’s beautifully produced!

The Bible in Women’s Voices

This is not a complete Bible, but a work in progress that invites women to offer their own voices and record themselves reading portions of scripture. As long as you have a quiet space, a Bible, and a means to record yourself — you can contribute!

Word Becomes Flesh New Testament

Right off the bat, I’m not in love with how this product is marketed towards women. There is no absolutely reason why men cannot benefit from scripture read by women, or why male-narrated Bibles are to be the default. Nevertheless, this is a CD resource for those who may not have access to a smart phone or computer.

If you’ve listened to any of these, I’d love to hear your thoughts!

  1. I’ve never seen an audio Bible narrated by a woman. I used to have a Bible on cassette that had men and women voices dramatizing the reading, which was fun. I now have CD’s of the Bible read by a luxurious male voice that is British.
